Title of the presentation:
Communist popular culture – ideological analysis of television serial fiction

Short abstract of the presentation:
Students will be presented samples of television serials produced by television organization under communist regime. (It will be DVD recordings of television serials produced by Czechoslovak television subtitled in English.) Lecturer will shortly present substantial aspects of ideology analysis and differences between formal (totalitarian) and informal (democratically contested) ideologies will be introduced. Workshop section will be based on inviting the students to write their own scripts for propagandist television serial program. They will work in groups according to the specific assignment. In the end one member from each of the groups will present basic narrative features of the proposed program and its ideological potential.

Short biography:
Irena Reifova, Ph.D, is a lecturer and researcher at Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Media Studies. She teaches courses on critical media theories, cultural studies and media audiences. Her major scholar interests are in television popular culture, she focuses especially on Czechoslovak and Czech serial television fiction. She is a co-author of a student book on quantitative content analysis, editor of Dictionary of Media Communication, translates media studies works from English. She is a member of Editorial Board of Czech and Slovak journal Media Studies. She is also a lecturer at ECREA Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School.
