Title of the presentation:
Communist popular culture – ideological analysis of television serial fiction

Short abstract of the presentation:
Students will be presented samples of television serials produced by television organization under communist regime. (It will be DVD recordings of television serials produced by Czechoslovak television subtitled in English.) Lecturer will shortly present substantial aspects of ideology analysis, mainly structuralist perspective emphasizing binary oppositions and paradigmatic choices. Students than will be encouraged to look for ideological elements in parts of screened TV serials.

Short biography:
Irena Reifova, Ph.D, is a lecturer and researcher at Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Media Studies. She teaches courses on critical media theories, cultural studies and media audiences. Her major scholar interests are in television popular culture, she focuses especially on Czechoslovak and Czech serial television fiction. She is a co-author of a student book on quantitative content analysis, editor of Dictionary of Media Communication, translates media studies works from English. She is a member of Editorial Board of Czech and Slovak journal Media Studies. She is also a lecturer at ECREA Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School.
